The Name behind the Man - DAMON

My full name is Damon Malcolm Lord.

DAMON

My first name, Damon, was chosen by my father. The reason for choice was that it was unusual, and was found in a large book of baby names that belonged to my maternal grandmother.

The meaning of the name is defined as follows at www.behindthename.com:

Derived from Greek δαμαω (damao) meaning "to tame". According to Greek legend, Damon and Pythias were friends who lived on Syracuse in the 4th century BC. When Pythias was sentenced to death, he was allowed to temporarily go free on the condition that Damon take his place in prison. Pythias returned just before Damon was to be executed in his place, and the king was so impressed with their loyalty to one another that he pardoned Pythias.

As a teenager, as teenagers are wont to do in folly, I played with my first name further, writing my first name as damon (all lower case), Dämon (with an umlaut over the A), Dämon (with the A receiving an umlaut and underlining), and even Dæmon (with the old English/Icelandic letter ash replacing the A). In the end I finished with such silliness, and returned to plain Damon.
