Lord family crest The Name behind the Man - LORD

My full name is Damon Malcolm Lord.

LORD

The family name is Lord and as with practically all instances of British names, the surname comes last. Family tradition states that the coat of arms presented to the right applies to my immediate family. This design is tattooed on my sister's back, although technically for her it should be a lozenge instead of a shield. More on Lord heraldry below.

My family name has often, amongst non-anglophonic people, been misinterpreted as the title. However, I am not a peer of the realm, but a person with the surname of Lord, rather than the title of Lord!

The meaning of the name is defined as follows at www.houseofnames.com:

The name LORD is Anglo-Saxon in origin. It was a name given to a hlalord which meant keeper of the loaf. This person was responsible for supplying food to those under his care.... First found in Suffolk where they held a family seat from very early times.

An interesting and comprehensive website on the heraldry and genealogy of (another branch of) the Lord family is http://home.att.net/~p_lord/lordarms1.html (Linked with permission). The author (who is not known to me) does a far better job writing about this than I could do on this fascinating subject! If you will excuse my lack of heraldic vocabulary, his crest depicts a red strip in the centre, rather than the blue on ours. The one with the central blue (azure) stripe is decribed as the second example from Encyclopedia Heraldica, 1828, on the More Variant Arms page.
