PREPOSITIONS

All prepositions usually govern the accusative, with the exception of the following list, which govern the dative. Some cause mutation on the word following and are marked here with an asterisk, so be sure to note these especially:

an * = on, in
by = by,beside
æfter = after
ere * = before
frum = from, by (author)
gæn * = with
lang = along, according to
o * = from, out of
tei = to
yntei = into

lang is always placed after the noun (and adjective)  it belongs to.

Ðam Vann henum lang, eom igh guð.
According to the old man, I am good.
(the man old according-to, am I good) For more on word order, see the chapter on verbs.

There are other prepositions which are governed by the dative, but these may also be governed by the accusative. These include such prepositions as:

an * = on, in
yn * = in
ynterð = between, betwixt

There are two prepostions which require special attention.

They are gæn (with) and tei (to) with yntei behaving like tei.

Gæn and tei act normally in most cases, but when operating with prepositions, they do not act like other prepositions, in that instead of placing the pronoun after the preoposition, the pronoun actually merges with the preposition.

Gæn and tei run as follows:
